Australian Shepherd Exercise: Fueling a Brilliant Mind and Body

The Australian Shepherd is a bundle of energy, intelligence, and athleticism. Proper exercise isn’t just a recommendation for this breed—it’s an absolute necessity for their physical and mental well-being. An under-exercised Aussie will quickly become bored, destructive, and may develop anxiety-based behaviors.

At Elysian Shepherds, we believe understanding and fulfilling this core need is the first step to a harmonious life with your new companion.

The Daily Goal: More Than Just a Walk

A simple stroll around the block is a warm-up, not a workout, for an Australian Shepherd. Their exercise regimen should be a balanced mix of physical exertion and mental stimulation.

Aim for a minimum of 1-2 hours of active exercise and engagement every single day. This can be broken into multiple sessions.

The Best Types of Exercise for an Australian Shepherd

To truly satisfy an Aussie, combine these different forms of exercise:

1. High-Intensity Physical Exercise

  • Running & Jogging: An excellent way to burn their boundless energy. They are perfect companions for runners.

  • Hiking: The varied terrain and new smells provide fantastic physical and mental stimulation. An Aussie is the ultimate adventure buddy on the trail.

  • Cycling: Teaching your Aussie to run safely alongside a bike (using a specific dog-safe attachment like a “Walky Dog”) is a superb way to cover ground and let them sprint.

  • Swimming: Many Aussies love water! Swimming is a low-impact, full-body workout that’s easy on their joints.

  • Agility: This sport is a natural fit. It combines running, jumping, and obedience, providing an intense physical and mental challenge.

2. Essential Mental Stimulation & “Work”
This is non-negotiable. A tired Aussie body is nothing without a tired Aussie mind.

  • Advanced Obedience Training: Don’t stop at “sit” and “stay.” Teach them complex commands, tricks, and sequences.

  • Interactive Toys & Puzzles: Food-dispensing puzzles, snuffle mats, and treat balls force them to problem-solve to get a reward.

  • Herding Instinct: If you have the opportunity, channel their innate drive. Herding balls or introductory sessions with livestock can be incredibly fulfilling.

  • Scent Work: Hide treats or a favorite toy around the house or yard and have them “find it.” This taps into their powerful natural instincts.

3. Structured Play & Bonding

  • Frisbee & Fetch: Aussies are famous for their love of fetch. Use a ball launcher or frisbee to maximize the running distance.

  • Tug-of-War: A great game of controlled tug provides an excellent physical and mental outlet, teaching impulse control.

Puppy Exercise: A Special Note

Puppies have different needs than adult dogs. Their growing joints are soft and vulnerable.

  • The 5-Minute Rule: A general guideline is 5 minutes of structured exercise per month of age, twice a day. For example, a 4-month-old puppy should have about 20 minutes of focused play, twice daily.

  • Focus on Play & Socialization: Let them play freely in a safe, enclosed area. Prioritize soft surfaces like grass over concrete. Socialization with other vaccinated, gentle dogs is also a form of valuable mental exercise.

  • Avoid Repetitive Impact: No forced running on hard surfaces, no long jogs, and no high-impact jumping until they are fully grown (around 12-18 months).

Consequences of Inadequate Exercise

An Aussie without an outlet will create their own, which usually involves behaviors you don’t want:

  • Destructive chewing (on furniture, shoes, walls)

  • Excessive barking

  • Digging

  • Herding behaviors directed at children or other pets (nipping at heels)

  • Restlessness and anxiety
